Logan Airport Noise?

Logan Airport Noise?

Call the Massport Noise Complaint Line at 617-561-3333!

I was watching the Bruins play Toronto on May 8, 2013 and as much as I wanted to watch the game, I was falling asleep in my chair, so I taped it and went to bed. It was shortly after 10 pm and I fell very soundly asleep in a matter of minutes.

At 10:19 pm I was woken up by a very noisy jet. I thought that this was odd because I had not heard one all night and usually when there is a Northwest wind, I can hear them taking off on runway 33L every couple of minutes. I think I heard one more jet that night and I fell back asleep pretty quickly.

Now, I have called the Massport Noise Complaint Line at 617-561-3333 in the past and I should have called the next day but like so many other people, I didn’t. This line is staffed from 7:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on business days.

Eventually, I did look up the jet on the Airport Monitor and to my surprise it was an Arrival. I saw it coming in over Quincy and flying right over my house at 5,900 feet. It was a Boeing 738 and it headed north up to Andover, turned clockwise and landed on runway 22. If you want to find out what type of jet you are hearing, you can check http://www.massport.com/environment/environmental_reporting/Noise%20Abatement/AirportMonitor.aspx

I did call Dorothy Connolly Steele, the Massport Manager of Government and Community Affairs, and told her that people have been complaining about the noise at the Medford City Council meetings and she asked me to share the following information with Medford residents and the City Council:

“As you know Medford is affected by Logan airport’s runway 33L over flights. During the 2012 calendar year, of the 2,322 calls received by Massport’s noise abatement department 15 were from 10 Medford callers. Since January 2013 Massport has received 2 noise complaint calls from Medford residents.”

How Logan Airport Works
Massport’s website http://www.massport.com has a plethora if information about Massport’s policies, programs and operations and several pages are dedicated to educating the public about Massport’s noise abatement programs and how Logan Airport works. I’ve included some basic information below which is copied from the pages at this link http://www.massport.com/environment/environmental_reporting/noise%20abatement/overview.aspx. We would appreciate your sharing this link and information with interested Medford residents and council members.

Logan’s airfield layout consists of six runways, which vary in length from 2,557 feet to 10,081 feet. Logan’s runways are aligned in three directions with runway ends pointing toward six distinct compass headings. Aircraft must generally take off and land into the wind, so the availability of specific runway configurations is determined by wind speed and direction, and other weather conditions. The runway layout provides necessary operating flexibility given Logan’s coastal location and highly variable wind conditions. Non-coastal airports that do not experience the same variation in wind conditions may have a simpler airfield layout and fewer required operating configurations.

Runway use configurations
There are several primary runway configurations in use at Logan, with over 80 operating subsets of these configurations. The operational capacities of Logan’s existing configurations range from a maximum of approximately 120 operations per hour when the weather is good, winds are light, and three runways are available, to fewer than 60 hourly operations for a single runway.

Logan’s highest capacity configurations have three active runways which allow FAA controllers to segregate arriving aircraft of different size classes into two arrival streams and to use the third runway for aircraft departures. High capacity runway configurations are available at Logan nearly 80 percent of the year. For the remaining part of the year, poor wind and weather conditions restrict the airport to low capacity configurations with just one or two available runways.

The northeast-southwest-northwest configurations are the highest capacity configurations at Logan. These include the runways 4l, 4r, and 9 configuration, runways 22l, 22r, and 27 configuration and the runways 33l, 32 and 27 configuration. With three available runways, these configurations maximize the airports operating efficiency by providing two runways for arriving aircraft, which permits air traffic control to segregate aircraft of different size classes. Conversely, when the airport is restricted to a two-runway or one-runway configuration due to very strong winds, low visibility or snow conditions for example, with a single arrival stream, airfield capacity drops significantly.

Winds from different directions occur at Logan during a typical year. In light winds and good visibility, high capacity three-runway configurations are generally available. With moderate northeast and southwest winds, Logan can also operate on high capacity runway configurations. With northeast winds, the runways 4l, 4r and 9 configuration is available for use. When wind direction shifts to the southwest, the runways 22l, 22r and 27 configuration is used. When winds shift to the northwest, the runways 33l, 32 and 27 configuration is used when winds are from the southeast, runways 15r, 9, 14, and 15l are used.

The Greater Boston Tea Party Monthly Medford Meeting.

The Guest Speaker at the March meeting was Jim Stergios, Executive Director of the Pioneer Institute, MA’s premiere think tank for fiscally conservative policy.

An empty seat was hard to find and it was a great opportunity to hear how the state of MA spends our tax dollars and how it wastes them.

A lively question and answer session followed with the majority of the questions directed at health care and education.

Four candidates for political office were in attendance.

Frank Addivinola, candidate for U.S. Representative in the 5th Congressional District which is currently held by Ed Markey introduced himself.

Paul Caruccio from Winthrop, candidate for State Representative in the Nineteenth Suffolk district which includes all of Winthrop and some precincts in Revere and is currently held by Speaker of the House, Robert A. DeLeo announced his intention of running.

Sean Harrington, candidate for Arlington Town Meeting, Precinct 15 and Joe Monju, Candidate for Arlington Town Meeting, also spoke.

The next meeting of the GBTP will be held in a much larger hall. The meeting is on Wednesday, April 11, 2012, at 7 PM in the South Medford Fire Station Community Room (Engine 5) located at 0 Medford St, Medford, MA 02155. The location is easily accessible by bus, there is ample free parking and the room is wheelchair-accessible.

The GBTP is not a “Political Party,” and all are invited to attend whether you are a Democrat, Republican, Independent, Libertarian or any other affiliation.

From the GBTP website:
Our Mission: “The Greater Boston Tea Party is a group of citizens who are concerned with the increasingly burdensome reach of government.  Our mission is to educate and advocate for the restoration and defense of public policy that promotes limited government, free markets, free speech, individual liberty and personal responsibility, all tenets of the Constitution of the United States of America and the Bill of Rights.”

“We advocate citizen engagement through civil discourse, community involvement and online activities that promote peaceful and productive social change.”

Christine Morabito, President of the GBTP added, “If, like us, you are concerned about the direction of the country and want to make your voice heard, please come to our next meeting. I guarantee you will be in good company.”

MBTA faces “one of the most serious financial crises in its history.”

Fulton Heights to take brunt of the cuts. Green Line expansion project still moving forward.

On March 28, the MBTA announced that the the only Medford Bus Route to be eliminated is the Private Carrier Route 710.

The current proposal to help fund the MBTA’s Fiscal Year 2013 estimated $185 million budget shortfall proposes the elimination of 4 weekday bus routes, elimination of Private Carrier bus service in Medford and other cities and to raise fares.

See all reports at: About the MBTA

Public Meetings were held all over the Greater Boston area and the public comment period ended on March 13, 2012. There were 5,783 E-Mails submitted, along with approximately 400 letters. The meeting attendance was 5,924 individuals with 1,808 comments submitted.

This proposal eliminates the 710 Bus Route which services North Medford/Fulton Heights with principal stops at Highland & Doonan, the Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Meadow Glen Mall and Wellington Station.

An employee of Joseph’s Transportation reported, “We received a call last week informing us of the proposed cut.”

This past Wednesday a Green Line Extension meeting was held at Medford City Hall. The project is now in the Design Stage and current estimates for the entire project are in the neighborhood of $1 billion.

With the MBTA reporting, “This structural deficit will continue to grow through Fiscal Year 2016 and beyond under current conditions,” one outstanding question persists.

How can we build a $1 Billion dollar expansion with all the additional salaries and expenses involved when we are cutting services and raising fares just to cover one year’s deficit for the 1.3 million riders who use the MBTA today and with deficits predicted to grow?

It makes no sense.

40 Hour Adoration for Lent

FORTY HOUR ADORATION FOR LENT 2012

As part of our Lenten Renewal, can you set aside some time to visit with Jesus?

This is St. Joseph’s eighth celebration of 40 Hours Adoration!! It will take place in the Upper Church.

The 8AM daily Mass will be offered as usual because the Blessed Sacrament will be reposed while Mass is being celebrated.

This year, the first hour will be 3AM on Wednesday, March 21st and will close with Benediction at 7PM on Thursday, March 22nd. Each hour will start with a decade of the Rosary.

The 2012 theme is for the cure of cancer. The names of people you would like prayed for may be entered into a “Remembrance Book” in the foyer. These names will then be put on the altar during Adoration each week.

Robert Capucci (Left) beats Bernie Green for Republican State Committeeman in Medford.

Robert Capucci (Left) beats Bernie Green for Republican State Committee Chairman.

Capucci (left) poses with Frank L. McNamara at the Republican State Committee meeting last November.

Robert Capucci-R has defeated long time Massachusetts Republican Party State Committeeman Bernie Green-R in the 2nd Middlesex District which includes the cities of Cambridge, Medford, Somerville and Winchester.

Yesterday, Capucci said in a telephone interview, “I accept the results of the election and intend to serve out my term.”

Green carried the cities of Winchester and Cambridge by narrow margins and Capucci won overwhelmingly in Medford and by 60 votes in Somerville.

The unofficial breakdown by city is :

Capucci:
Medford – 1103
Somerville – 482
Winchester – 406
Cambridge – 192
Total – 2183

Green:
Medford – 789
Somerville – 422
Winchester – 474
Cambridge – 214
Total – 1899

In February, Capucci suspended his campaign but his name was still on the ballot. Capucci reported today in an email response, “When I suspended my campaign, I made it clear that I would still be on the ballot and if I won I would accept and serve.”

Bernie Green was under the impression that Capucci had withdrawn from the race and yesterday he said, “I am not sure what to make of this situation.”

Another surprise from the Presidential Primary held this past Tuesday won by Obama for the Democrats and Romney for the Republicans and according to a report in Medford Patch, is that of the 4,340 ballots that were cast in Medford, 2,577 ballots cast were for the Republican Party and 1642 ballots cast were for the Democrat Party.

A Medford Registrar of Voters employee added, “The vast majority of calls that came in were people asking if there were any Democrats on the ballot.”

UN Agenda 21 and International Baccalaureate

Medford City Councillor Bob Penta has introduced Resolution 11-726 to discuss Agenda 21 and the UN International Baccalaureate (IB) program “if in fact the Medford Public School system is participating in such programs.” The meeting is this Tuesday, November 29 at Medford City Hall at 7 PM.

I will be speaking there as will many others and in my opinion it is the most important City Council meeting facing the residents of Medford.

Hope to see you there.

Is the International Baccalaureate Programme Co-opting Your Child?
by Laura Rambeau Lee

The International Baccalaureate Programme was founded in 1968 in Geneva, Switzerland, by Alec Peterson. According to the IBO.org website Alec Peterson “was born in Edinburgh in 1908 and entered the teaching profession in 1932. During the Second World War Peterson was deputy-director ofpsychological warfare (writer’s italics) for South-East Asia Command, serving on Lord Mountbatten’s staff; and from 1952–54 he was director general of information services during the Malaysian emergency.

This military background was to provide him with contacts at the highest levels—contacts that greatly assisted the acceptance of the IB by ministries of education and governments.” Its mission is to create a better world through education. In 2010 it implemented a five year strategy to establish its leadership in international education.

Although IB began as a secondary level education program, they now have three programs: the Primary Years Programme (PYP) beginning with children aged 3 to 12; the Middle Years Programme (MYP) for children from 11 to 16 years old; and the Diploma Programme (DP) for students from 16 through 19 years old.

The IB has been recognized as a non-government organization (NGO) of UNESCO since 1970 and currently has the status of “formal consultative relations as a network” with UNESCO. Representatives from IB participate regularly in UNESCO meetings and comment on UNESCO proposals in education in their Education for All initiative. Although the IB programme initially began in private schools, today over half of all IB World Schools are state schools.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was established on November 16, 1945. The goal of this organization is to work “to create the conditions for dialogue among civilizations, cultures and peoples, based upon respect for commonly shared values. It is through this dialogue that the world can achieve global visions of sustainable development encompassing observance of human rights, mutual respect and the alleviation of poverty, all of which are at the heart of UNESCO’s mission and activities.”

Today the IB has over 940,000 students in 3256 schools in over 140 countries. In the United States, the Primary Years Programme is in 280 schools, the Middle Years Programme is in 445 schools, and the Diploma Programme is in 751 schools.

According to the IB website “The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect”. In addition, “these programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right.”

Students in the IB Programme experience a rigorous course of study, with a focus on the global community and their responsibility to the world as a global citizen. Their education focuses not only on the basics, but on the cultivation of the “international-mindedness” of the student. The IB espouses the principle of educating “the whole person for a life of active, responsible citizenship.” The core philosophy of the IB Programme is the “Theory of Knowledge” (TOK). This theory essentially questions everything, starting with the basic “How do we know?” It encourages a child to question prior core factual knowledge. If, for instance, a consensus agrees that 2 + 2 = 5 then it must be true.

Students participating in the IB Programme are not assessed by their local schools. There are over 10,500 examiners and moderators who assess their work and are located all over the world.

The current Chair of the IB Board of Governors is Carol Bellamy. Prior to this position she was President and CEO of World Learning, a private, nonprofit organization promoting international understanding through education and development in over 70 countries. She was an executive director of UNICEF from 1995 until 2005 and was also the first former volunteer to become Director of the Peace Corps, appointed to the position by President Clinton. She had also worked at the financial institutions Bears Stearns and Morgan Stanley.

She was elected as New York State Senator in 1972 and was elected as the first female president of the New York City Council in 1977. In 2007 she was elected Chair of the Board of Directors of the Fair Labor Association, which protects workers rights and working conditions based on international labor standards. On February 18, 2011 Bellamy was named Chair of the Alliance for Ethical International Recruitment Practices, a non-profit created to ensure that recruitment of foreign-educated health professionals to the United States is ethical, responsible and transparent.

The International Baccalaureate Programme is selecting our best and brightest children at the most impressionable time in their lives to indoctrinate them into becoming good “global citizens”. It should be of great concern to all responsible and caring parents that the IB program does not recognize their child as an individual who may possess a special talent or ability. The program appears to be a well organized attempt to mold the child into becoming a good global citizen, impressing upon them that they are a part of the greater global community, or collective. The primary focus of an IB education is on the environment, sustainability, economic justice and sharing our humanity.

A call to the local school district to inquire about the IB programme directs you to another regional number. When asked about the curriculum for IB, the school board states that they do not have any of that information. They do not oversee the program nor do they have any knowledge of what our children are being taught in IB!

The Global Engage IBO site quotes Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Odd choice of words, don’t you think?
Students have made many videos for their International Baccalaureate projects that can be found on youtube. Watch a few of them. What our children are subjected to in IB is absolutely chilling.
