Robert Capucci-R has defeated long time Massachusetts Republican Party State Committeeman Bernie Green-R in the 2nd Middlesex District which includes the cities of Cambridge, Medford, Somerville and Winchester.

Yesterday, Capucci said in a telephone interview, “I accept the results of the election and intend to serve out my term.”

Green carried the cities of Winchester and Cambridge by narrow margins and Capucci won overwhelmingly in Medford and by 60 votes in Somerville.

The unofficial breakdown by city is :

Capucci:
Medford – 1103
Somerville – 482
Winchester – 406
Cambridge – 192
Total – 2183

Green:
Medford – 789
Somerville – 422
Winchester – 474
Cambridge – 214
Total – 1899

In February, Capucci suspended his campaign but his name was still on the ballot. Capucci reported today in an email response, “When I suspended my campaign, I made it clear that I would still be on the ballot and if I won I would accept and serve.”

Bernie Green was under the impression that Capucci had withdrawn from the race and yesterday he said, “I am not sure what to make of this situation.”

Another surprise from the Presidential Primary held this past Tuesday won by Obama for the Democrats and Romney for the Republicans and according to a report in Medford Patch, is that of the 4,340 ballots that were cast in Medford, 2,577 ballots cast were for the Republican Party and 1642 ballots cast were for the Democrat Party.

A Medford Registrar of Voters employee added, “The vast majority of calls that came in were people asking if there were any Democrats on the ballot.”
